Beauty Books

I happen to own quite a lot of beauty and fashion books, and I thought I would share them. I received all of these as various birthday and Christmas presents, and several were from charity shops, so have a rummage and see what you can find. (I'm leaving Amazon links below, but just type in the book name on Google to get a better option!)

Reviews and links:

  • Fashionista: A Century of Style Icons ~ This is a beautiful 'coffee table' book with stunning photos interspersed with writing about fashion's biggest influences ~ Link

  • Bobbi Brown Beauty ~ Slightly outdated, but perfect for beginners who want to know some important makeup tricks ~ Link

  • Bobbi Brown Makeup Manual ~ Stunning, informative and inspiring. I absolutely love this book, from the stunning photos and tutorials, to the information about diet and the makeup industry - worth the money!  ~ Link

  • Liz Earle Skin Secrets (I have the older version) ~ an interesting insight into the natural methods to get perfect skin - very helpful in amending your diet, doing exercise and how to fix skin conditions, particularly if you are interested in natural beauty and remedies ~ Link
  •

  • Bobbi Brown Teenage Beauty ~ very '90s, but a good place for young people to start ~ Link

  • 100 Ways for Every Girl to Look and Feel Fantastic ~ more of a growing up/self-confidence book, but with important messages and tips for teenagers trying to improve their image and confidence ~ Link

  • 21st Century Beauty Bible ~ a nice layout with excellent tips, but, as it was published a while ago, the tried & tested section may not be the best resource for information Link

Nivea Pure & Natural Moisturisers

Although it's been available for a while, I recently discovered the Nivea Pure & Natural collection with 95% of its ingredients of natural origin. After finishing a pot of Liz Earle moisturiser, I was looking for something, light, gentle and preferably natural. I couldn't justify spending £20 on a new pot of moisturiser, so me and my mum went of a little hunt around Boots for something that would suit my rather picky tastes.

We came across this range which I was immediately enticed to due to the fancy, slightly glowy packaging. Both moisturisers have a strong floral/plant scent, which some people may not like, but I've grown used to it and now find it quite calming.

The Day Cream - £5.35 (Boots)

The day cream is very light, slightly plumping and hydrating. When I put this on it makes my skin look glowy and makes my makeup apply better. The only thing that I don't like, which some people may like, is that I can feel that I applied moisturiser at the beginning of the day, up until I take it off in the evening and it leaves my neck slightly sticky. It is, however a pleasure to apply, very nourishing, and since using it, discolouration of my skin has reduced.

The Night Cream - £5.35 (Boots)

The night cream is slightly richer and thicker, perfect to hydrate your skin through the night. This moisturiser is less sticky than the day cream, with the same relaxing scent and properties. My skin in the morning looks renewed, healthy and refreshed, and some of my spots reduce or disappear (although this is probably mostly due to the other products I use - comment below if you would like to see an updated skincare routine because I've changed pretty much all of the products I use).

If you're on a budget and you're trying to find a good moisturiser, these two are fantastic, depending on if you like the scent - if you don't, I wouldn't recommend buying it because the smell is quite strong, even on the skin.

Things I'm Proud Of From January

So, I missed a month of blogging... Oh well!

I decided not to do the typical 'New Year, New Me' blog post or a New Year's resolutions post because I prefer to try my best and see where it takes me, rather than setting myself rules. I did, however, do a few things this month which I'm proud of, and which I would like to share with you.

1) Throw a surprise birthday party - January was my friend Sophie's birthday and as she wasn't planning on doing anything, me and another friend decided to throw a surprise birthday party. We decided to tell her that 3 of us would be going bowling, but arranged for a few others to be there. Unfortunately, half of the people couldn't make it, but there were still enough to give her a surprise! I took a hilarious video of Sophie screaming when everyone jumped out; I'm so proud of how happy we were able to make her and I think she's still in disbelief!

2) Making myself happy - In January I made a conscious effort to be happy and surround myself with the happiest, loveliest people who make me smile and laugh. Through this, I gained a lovely group of people who have boosted my confidence and made me feel accepted, but, unfortunately, also lost some people who weren't making me feel so good. I've been smiling non-stop this month, and although I had a couple of those hormonal down-days, I overall felt amazing.

3) Drink more water - I've really tried to have several large glasses of water per day, even when I'm not thirsty, and my skin has really benefitted from it. I also like to add a bit of squash to my water to make it tastier if I'm craving sugar, because it's better for me than having a load of sweets.

4) Save up - I'm pretty good at saving up my money, and I'm proud that I didn't splurge on anything in January, because it means that I have more money to spend on something I love this month, such as Zoeva brushes.

5) No makeup to school - On Friday I went to school wearing no makeup, for the first time since year 8 (I'm in year 10). I'm proud that I got the courage to do this, thanks to my friend Scarlett persuading me. I usually wear makeup to school for self-confidence but I actually felt really happy not wearing it (plus you don't have to worry about smudging your eye makeup when you touch your eyes!). People were so nice about it, so whilst this won't become an everyday thing, maybe I'll try weekly or fortnightly!

Thanks for reading! Leave me a comment telling me what you are most proud of from January and what you would like to see next on this blog.
